Panda Pandemonium

Two Giant Panda's Tian Tian and Yang Guang are settling into life at Edinburgh Zoo. I visited the zoo for the first time since I was a kid this year and absolutely loved it. I'm not exactly an animal person so was surprised how much  I enjoyed my day. The Panda's are looking like they are going to be a great tourist attraction and a wee helping hand to the economy too, so I'm all for the Panda Pandemonium.

If you fancy getting involved I've found some super cute Panda treats...

Panda Jumper £30 Asos
White Coin Purse River Island £13

Panda Hot Water Bottle £17.99 What 2 Buy For Kids

Panda Ballerina Slippers £12  Accessorize

Panda Cupcake Necklace £5.99 Attitude Clothing

Hope you like my panda picks and if you want to keep up to date with Tian Tian and Yang Guang you can get updates here  http://www.facebook.com/EdinburghZooScotland?sk=wall

First Christmas Outfit...

Yesterday I had my first taste of Christmas 2011. Each year my work hosts the Cash For Kids Christmas lunch to raise money for underprivileged children in the local area. This year we had performances from Emeli Sande, Gamu, Jai McDowall, Kassidy and Rebecca Ferguson and raised £72,000 for the charity. It's always a tricky event to dress for. Tying to find an outfit that looks glamorous and Christmasy but you can also comfortable enough to run around backstage in.

In the past I've tended to stick to black for working backstage but this year as I was trying to juggle Floor Manager with a little presenting I decided to opt for a splash of colour...

Structured Sleeveless Skater Dress £46 from Topshop

The red gives it the Christmasy feel I was looking for (also available in Black, Navy, Mustard and Aubergine) and the skater shape made it comfortable to run around in. I had planned to wear a thin belt but when I spotted this on in River Island I thought it added the perfect touch of glam...

Black Bow Wide Waist Belt £16 River Island
I decided to play it safe with the shoes and opted for a simple black suede heel...

Suede Platform Heel £29.99 New Look
A stiletto heel would never do for the running around that we do and even these started to ache after 7 hours, thankfully I had a pair of flats for the clear up. It wasn't the most exciting event outfit I've put together but I hope the simplicity and block colour made it work. I've only just realised I didn't take a single picture of myself yesterday. Thankfully No1 magazine was there to capture the looks of the day. I'll post a picture when they go up on-line.

Men Make Better Men...

I have always loved the story my parents tell of my childhood; that I slept with books under my pillow. Each night they would tidy away my books but each morning they would wake to find another pile of books. I’m not sure if I would read them through the night or if I just put them there to colour my dreams but it’s a passion that has stayed with me for life! I even achieved a diploma in bookselling whilst working part time in a bookstore to help me through university.

With work so busy I don’t have as much time to read as I would like, however, I still fall asleep most nights with a book in my hand. I’ve started to notice a trend in my reading pattern where I’m getting hooked on male authors writing about life and love. I blame Tony Parsons and his 1999 novel Man and Boy.

http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/products/tony+parsons/man+and+boy/3820345/

It was probably the first book, excluding the classics, written by a male author that I really connected with. It’s a simple story about a Man who cheats on his wife and consequently finds himself a single parent. You get to know Harry Silver as he turns 30, gets to know his 4 year old son and learns the trials and tribulations of dating with a child in tow.

This is a sweeping generalisation but I tend to find female authors can be guilty of creating the kind of characters that we all long to meet in real life. Mr Perfect. I find the honesty that Tony Parsons writes with is refreshing. Harry Silver is far from a perfect man but as I got to know him I fell for him harder than the idea of the perfect man and when he did inevitably make mistakes I found myself much more forgiving. One of those books that you slow down reading at the end because you know you’ll miss the characters being in your life. Luckily it doesn’t end there as you can follow Harry to Man and Wife and Men from the Boys.

I read this book years ago but thought of it a lot whilst reading David Nicholls One Day but that's for another day...

Kassidy

I went to see Lana Del Rey (who I blogged about last month - current obsession) last night at the Oran Mor in Glasgow. I’ve slightly fallen in love with her voice and was worried she might disappoint live. I needn’t have worried her voice was just as stunning with that haunting edge live as it is recorded. It was a short show which felt more like a showcase than a headline gig but I left more than satisfied.

This blog however is not about her but inspired by her gig. I love the camaraderie in the Glasgow music scene, going to a gig and the audience being full of bands checking out what’s new. Last night I noticed the boys from one of my favourite Scottish bands in the audience; Kassidy. Their debut album Hope St came out in March and has still not left my car CD changer. It doesn’t matter how much I listen to this band I just don’t get bored. Their harmonies are breath taking with four contrasting tones blending into an unforgettable sound. I could take about their music all day but their music says it best just be warned you will not be able to listen just once…

Kassidy - I Dont Know

I feel so fortunate as I got see these guys play in the most intimate of settings. I was asked to interview a new Glasgow band and record a quick session at my work at West Fm. When the guys came in I instantly warmed to them so down to earth and they seemed genuinely excited to be playing for us. After a quick chat we got down to business and started recording the session. I was instantly blown away! I can’t explain what was going through my mind but I knew this was a band that were going places and were going to have spot in my heart for a long time to come.

Unfortunately I hadn’t thought to video this session, something I wish I could share with everyone, just the band, the manager, a sound technician and me. A day I’ll never forget. This was that first song that hooked me in; I hope it does the same for you…

Kassidy - The Traveler

I can’t rave enough about this band live check out their tour dates here - Kassidy. If you get the chance you will not regret it.

Explosions in the sky

Every year just before Guy Fawkes Night I like to get my winter coat. I don’t like to start wrapping up too early; my mum always told me you’d never feel the benefit when winter hit. Bonfire night is always the first night of the year you have a real excuse to wrap up warm look out a woolly hat, gloves and of course show off your new winter coat. This year I have been loving capes. Only problem was picking one because I just loved so many of them! Here are some of my favourites…

Phase Eight 160

Wallis 50

Dorothy Perkins 69

Topshop 65
When I researched this on-line I have to admit I never even noticed the bottom coat from Topshop but when I went shopping it caught my eye and I ended up buying it. In this picture you can't see it is a cape but it has a realy nice batwing effect when on. At first I was worried it was more casual than I wanted but the colour and shape look much better on and the cosy fluffy sheepskin collar just makes it for me.

The best bit was it was reduced from 80 to 65 so I’m actually considering getting a second coat for this winter my budget for one coat was 100 so my decision now is do I stretch it a little and buy the Wallis checked number? (my grandpa’s football team was Auchinleck Talbot who play in those colours they always give me happy memoires) Or do I buy a plain black coat from H&M and stay with in budget? Well that’s a decision for another day…. For today I’m going wrap up warm for the fireworks, run around like a kid and pretend I can fly in my new cape coat…

No Trick all Treat

With Halloween just around the corner I had to share these spooky sparkles from Crystal Inc Boutique. I love any excuse to shop but every year I waste so much money trying to make costumes, which I’ll never wear again. This necklace provides a touch of Halloween but can be worn all year round…

The autumnal colour of the stone is perfect to accompany this seasons jewel colours. At just £8 it really is no trick and all treat! For those who suffer from arachnophobia there’s plenty more to choose from including this cheeky little skull ring only £6…

I’ll never grow out of dooking for apples but this year I think I’ll favour these spooky sparkles over my usual badly made costumes.

Current Obsession

One of the things I love about working in radio is hearing new artists emerge. I love discovering someone new and spending hours on-line listening to all the different songs and versions, the first time you experience them live and the excitement as you get to hear their album for the first time. Lana Del Rey is my newest obsession, her single Video Games was recently added to the West FM playlist. I like to listen to all the new stuff before it goes on-air and when I heard this song I was instantly captivated.

The track is utterly haunting, her voice has a real Hollywood glamour to it with all the tragic connotations that go along with old school Hollywood. I love the grainy quality, the retro feel to the video and the juxtaposition of the fame hungry star and the old footage of photographers. I feared this may be one of those acts that gets the big push but cant back it up with anything but one great track. I was totally wrong. I came across more of her music and fell even deeper for her voice and style. I love the way in Blue Jeans she brings a much more current feel.

Both songs are available now as a double A side http://www.lanadelrey.com/

Home Sweet Home

In this post I thought I’d give you a little insight into me and my life. I work at West FM my local radio station where I present the 10am to 2pm workday slot. A lot of people think the life of a presenter is a crazy and glamorous one filled with champagne and high heels. At times it can be but what I love most is a quiet night at home. I recently moved into a new flat with the Boy Toy (he’s four years younger… I’m a mini cougar) and were slowly but surely turning it into a home...

The perfect blogging spot

It’s got to the time of year I can finally justify sticking on the fire, lighting the candles and having a cosy night snuggled up with a book. I always think I’m a sun worshiper personified and dread the winter every year. As winter creeps in this year I’m finally willing to admit… it’s definitely got it’s good points.

Halloween done classy

I found this dress completely by mistake but it was an instant attraction and an instant purchase...

http://www.very.co.uk/fearne-cotton-cape-back-maxi-dress/977221780.prd?browseToken=%2fb%2f1655%2c4294954879%2fs%2fbestsellers%2c0%2fo%2f2&cmsPage=fearnecottonGallery&trail=4294954879-1655

I was searching for cape coats when I came across this and had to have it. I have an annual formal event in January – I know it’s ages away but with the sales there’s never anything good on the shelves by then. It’s from the Fearne Cotton range for Very, I’ve never ordered from them before but it was pretty straight forward, I ordered it yesterday evening and it’s waiting for me at home as I type….eek!

Far too pretty and expensive to be used as a Halloween costume straight off but in a couple of years when it’s made it way to the back of my wardrobe I’m thinking perfect Morticia Adams dress… it’s all about cost per wear.
